What Do You Do When Children Misbehave
Last year I attended a
parenting course at my church, Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale, the class is called
passing down the legacy. The class is offered to parents with children between
the ages of four and eighteen years old. The class teaches God’s perspective on
raising a family. Over a 6 weeks period parents study the following topics:
relationships, communication, honor, authority, discipline, life-skills, and
training in godliness.
In this class, I learned
once the rules have been well-defined and penalties of misbehavior have been conversed
to the child, it is our accountabilities as parents to make sure that the child
experiences the costs of his or her mischievousness. When parents are lenient one day and lets
misbehave slide, and the next day he or she comes down stiff on the child for
the same misbehavior, the parents are on the sure road of rearing a
disobedient, disrespectful child. Fickle discipline is the most common pitfall
of parents who are trying to raise liable kids. Experts say that the
consequences should be brought to bear as quickly after disobedience has occurred
as possible. However, the discipline must be administered with love and
firmness.
