Family Mission
Statement
Volunteering
in the children ministry at Calvary Chapel and working for the Broward County
School Board have provided me with massive experience with hundreds of families
all over the tri-county. These exposures have helped me to understand the great
value of a clear and precise family mission statement.
According
to one of my favorite Author, Stephen Covey; “A family mission statement is
a combined, unified expression from all family members of what your family
is all about what it is you really want to do and be — and
the principles you choose to govern your family life.” -Stephen Covey
The
main purpose of a family mission statement is to discover everyone’s passion,
feelings and ideas about how the family is going to operate. It is a great
experience for kids to feel their ideas, opinions and their contributions are
valued by their parents. They love to know that they are an important component
in making the family function day to day and making the family all that it can
be. The end of December is the best time at my house to set family and personal
mission, goals and New Year’s resolution. We normally call a family meeting to
inform them of our concepts and philosophies. It is critically important that
parents make the process fun and enjoyable; especially if there are small
children involved.
The
followings are some questions we asked during our family meeting:
- What is our purpose as a family?
- What are priorities are?
- What are the ideologies and strategies we want to follow?
- What makes each and every one of us unique, talents and gifts?
- What are our responsibilities as members of this awesome family?
- How are we going to utilized our time, talents, and gift to glorify God?
- What kind of environment will we create in our home?
- How we will treat our guests?
- How we will treat each other?
The
Garcon’s Family covenant: to love each other, to help each other, to have faith
in each other, to utilize our time, skills, knowledge, money and resources
wisely, and to worship our Lord and Savior until the end of time.
